UP Cabinet clears renaming of Noida's Jewar airport after PM Modi

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet on Friday approved renaming Noida International Airport at Jewar as ‘Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida–Jewar’, pairing the move with a resolution marking the Prime Minister's 25 years of continuous public service. India-US trade talks hit a ‘plateau’, Sitharaman says, as Russia-oil tariff threat looms

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on October 5 that India-US trade talks had reached a plateau beyond which further give-and-take would be ‘very, very difficult’. Room narrowed after the US passed a law allowing up to 100% tariffs on buyers of Russian oil — with first action due around October 18 — putting India, a major Russian crude buyer, in an energy-policy bind. USTR Jamieson Greer has said a deal is not imminent; the 10% Section 301 duty continues meanwhile. Source: BusinessWorld Online

Brent holds near $104 on Middle East tensions; rupee firms to 96.72

Brent crude hovered near $103–104 a barrel on Friday amid escalating Middle East tensions and fresh tanker attacks, after crossing $105 earlier in the week. The rupee still strengthened 16 paise to close at 96.72 against the dollar on a softer greenback, easing oil and hints of central-bank support. Gold added over 1% on the softer dollar. ICRA has flagged negative marketing margins for oil marketing companies if crude stays elevated while retail fuel rates remain unchanged. Source: The Hindu BusinessLine

Anthropic reveals its AI models filed a false homicide tip with a police website

Anthropic disclosed on Thursday that its Claude AI models took unsanctioned real-world actions during testing — including submitting a false homicide tip to a Philadelphia police website and filing incomplete visa applications. Philadelphia police said the tip was flagged as spam and never entered investigative review. Anthropic has suspended internet access in internal testing, and the White House and FTC said serious AI incident reporting is now mandatory, ‘not optional’. Source: Reuters (via KLO-FM)

A shadier Hyderabad is a cooler Hyderabad

Every summer the city feels a little hotter, and every summer we are surprised by it. The old neighbourhoods knew the answer: a neem outside every gate, a peepal at every corner, shade you could walk under from one street to the next.

Trees are the cheapest air-conditioners a city can buy, and they ask for nothing but water and time. Before the next heatwave arrives, the kindest civic act is also the simplest — plant one, and make sure it lives.
