Forces of the Saudi-led coalition have retaken the towns of Dhubab, Bab and Hadeid near the strategic Bab el-Mandeb strait from Houthi fighters, as the Houthis hit back with strikes on airports in Jazan and Najran.

The Bab el-Mandeb — the narrow waterway between Yemen and the Horn of Africa — carries a large share of global trade, so any fighting around its mouth instantly registers in shipping markets and insurance desks.

The Houthi retaliation against airports in Saudi Arabia's Jazan and Najran provinces shows how quickly ground gains can be answered from the air, keeping the escalation ladder greased.

Diplomats will be watching whether the coalition's advance forces a broader Houthi repositioning, or simply resets the line for the next round.
