DRI seizes foreign currency worth Rs 1.56 crore at Hyderabad airport

Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officers at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport have seized foreign currency worth about Rs 1.56 crore from two Indian passengers travelling to Kuala Lumpur, arresting both.
A male passenger on AirAsia flight AK-68 was intercepted on October 22, with US dollars 66,600, Malaysian ringgit 3,773 and Singapore dollars 2 — worth about Rs 63.62 lakh — found concealed in a black plastic cover among clothes in his trolley bag.
Questioning led officers to a woman passenger travelling on the same flight under a separate booking. A search of her cabin baggage recovered US dollars 97,600, worth about Rs 91.94 lakh, hidden in a similar manner.
Both passengers were arrested after allegedly failing to produce documents supporting lawful procurement and carriage of the currency, and further investigation is under way.
