GMR has proposed a Rs 13,917-14,000 crore expansion of Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, anchored by a 225,000 sqm northern terminal and a second runway, with passenger traffic projected to jump from 30.5 million to 51.5 million by FY 2030-31.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd has proposed a capital expenditure of about Rs 13,917-14,000 crore for the fourth control period (FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31) at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, drawn up as part of its filings to the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority. The plan aims to lift the airport's capacity in step with passenger traffic, which is estimated at 30.5 million in FY 2025-26 and is projected to touch 51.5 million by FY 2030-31.

The centrepiece is a new northern passenger terminal of about 225,000 sqm, costing around Rs 5,843 crore including roads, landscaping, IT systems and support facilities, aimed mainly at domestic traffic with flexibility for international operations. It would sit alongside a second runway of about 3,800 metres with a Category-I instrument landing system, PAPI and surface movement radar, supported by taxiways, an apron expansion and a 650-metre elevated cross-taxiway linking the northern and southern areas.

Airside works are estimated at Rs 2,809 crore, with the existing southern terminal being expanded from 34 mppa toward 40-47 mppa. Multi-level car parking would more than double from 2,600 to about 5,590 slots, and a second cargo terminal is planned. Work on the northern precinct is proposed to begin in FY 2026-27, targeting operational readiness by September 2029, with the Telangana government proposing a metro link from Nagole via LB Nagar and Chandrayangutta that GHIAL has said it will help fund on the airport side.
