UP cabinet moves to rename Jewar airport after Modi — a first for a sitting PM

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet on Friday passed a resolution to rename the upcoming Noida International Airport at Jewar as the Narendra Modi International Airport, Noida-Jewar, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced after chairing the meeting. Once implemented, it would become the first airport in the country named after a sitting Prime Minister.
Other major airports — Indira Gandhi International in Delhi, Chaudhary Charan Singh in Lucknow and Lal Bahadur Shastri in Varanasi — are all named after former prime ministers. Adityanath said the cabinet was grateful to the Prime Minister for “gifting” the airport to the state, calling it the largest in Uttar Pradesh and a future aviation hub.
The renaming resolution now awaits further procedural steps before it is formally gazetted and operationalised. The cabinet also extended greetings to Modi on completing 25 years in public service, beginning with his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001.
