Kenya has reported its first Ebola death after a traveller arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo, health authorities said, stepping up contact tracing and screening at borders and health facilities.

Officials said surveillance has been intensified to identify and monitor contacts of the deceased traveller, and urged the public to report symptoms early.

The case puts the region on alert, with the DR Congo having battled recurring Ebola outbreaks; neighbouring countries routinely tighten screening when cases cross borders.

No further confirmed cases had been reported at the time of going to press.
