Scientists at the University of Strathclyde and Durham University have proposed a detection system for hypothetical 'mirror life' — artificial organisms whose reversed molecular structures researchers warn could evade immune defences and spread unchecked.

The research, published on October 21, proposes identifying such organisms through specialised light measurements that pick up their reversed molecular structures, rather than waiting for the technology to create them to emerge.

The work follows extraordinary warnings from the scientific community: in December 2024, 38 scientists called in the journal Science for efforts to create self-replicating mirror organisms to be halted, warning they could resist conventional treatments and threaten humans, animals, plants and ecosystems.

Researchers say the detection proposal is a precaution — a way to spot a biological threat before it becomes impossible to contain, even as the creation of mirror bacteria remains hypothetical.
