The Earth Sciences ministry and ISRO signed an MoU on October 19 to run joint PhD programmes across ten research institutes.

The Ministry of Earth Sciences and ISRO formalised a new research partnership on October 19 by signing a memorandum of understanding in New Delhi. Under the agreement, all ten research institutes under the ministry will be recognised as ISRO-affiliated centres, opening the door to collaborative doctoral programmes.

The MoU combines the earth sciences ministry's research facilities and scientific expertise with ISRO's academic framework. Joint PhD projects will be launched in areas such as atmospheric science, oceanography, polar research and other earth-system domains. A unified governance model will appoint ISRO nodal coordinators at each institute and a central coordinator within the ministry to handle admissions, supervision and degree awards.

The collaboration is expected to deepen the scientific links between space-based observation and earth-system research in India. By tying the institutes into ISRO's academic system, the partnership aims to produce a steady stream of trained researchers working across climate, oceans and the atmosphere.
