Nicaragua quits Central American Parliament, deepening isolation

Nicaragua announced on Saturday it is withdrawing from the Central American Parliament with immediate effect, denouncing the 1987 treaty that founded the six-country body ‘in the full exercise of its sovereignty’.
The move followed an OAS resolution on Friday calling on Managua to free political prisoners and restore civil liberties. Nicaragua left the OAS itself in 2023, calling it a tool of US interventionism.
In 2025 it also withdrew from the UN Human Rights Council after a UN report urged action on rights violations by the Ortega government.
Daniel Ortega, in power continuously since 2007 alongside wife Rosario Murillo, announced last July that the country would no longer hold elections.
