27 killed in two mass shootings in South Africa; manhunt launched
At least 27 people were killed in two mass shootings hours apart in South Africa: 17 people (with 15 wounded) at a tavern in Wedela township, south-west of Johannesburg, around 9:30 pm on Saturday — eight suspects with AK-47s and pistols took patrons' phones before fleeing in two vehicles that were later set alight — and 10 killed (11 wounded) at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, Cape Town, at 1:46 am.
The South African Police Service has launched a manhunt; no arrests have been made and no motive has been established. The Wedela victims were 13 men and four women.
The attacks follow a deadly week in which 11 people were killed at a house party in Durban on Tuesday — 38 killed in three cities this week, against a national average of about 58 murders a day in the January–March quarter.
