US envoy meets Sudanese army chief in Egypt over ceasefire push

US Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs Massad Boulos met Sudan's army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan in Egypt on Monday, urging a political solution to a war that has displaced more than 14 million people since April 2023.

The rare face-to-face followed Washington's withholding of a visa for al-Burhan ahead of a UN appearance, a move tied to a US-backed ceasefire plan that Khartoum has resisted.

Boulos used the meeting to press for a political settlement, as the war grinds through its third year with one of the world's worst displacement crises.

Whether the outreach shifts al-Burhan's calculus remains the open question — past pressure campaigns have produced talks, but not an end to the fighting.
