Zelensky declares 'we're done' with energy truce, resumes strikes on Russian refineries

Kyiv says Moscow kept hitting Ukrainian power infrastructure during a three-day pause, so it has ended its halt on refinery strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has declared that Kyiv is abandoning the energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump, saying Russia continued to strike Ukrainian power infrastructure while Ukraine held its fire for three days. In an interview with the Financial Times published on Thursday, he said the ban on long-range attacks on Russian refineries was over.

Ukraine wasted no time acting on the decision: a Rosneft refinery in the Ryazan region southeast of Moscow, which accounts for nearly 5% of Russia's refining throughput, was hit by drones and caught fire on Thursday, according to the regional governor.

The move deepens the Kyiv-Washington rift. Zelensky has accused the US of pressing Ukraine into the truce while Russia escalated attacks that left over 600,000 Ukrainians without power, and has criticised Trump's recent diesel deal with Russia. Trump has responded by saying it may be time for Ukraine to get a new president.
