Neither Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva nor Flávio Bolsonaro won an outright majority in Brazil's presidential first round, setting up a runoff — while in Spain, Pedro Sánchez called an early election, reportedly for November 29.

Brazil's first round ended without a winner, sending Latin America's largest democracy into a high-stakes runoff between the incumbent and the Bolsonaro camp.

In Europe, Sánchez moved for a snap vote after housing-crisis protests sank his measures in parliament — the reported November 29 date gives parties barely seven weeks to campaign.

Both contests land in a year already crowded with pivotal elections, and their outcomes will ripple well beyond their borders.
