The Ministry of Education on Oct 3 approved five Centres of Excellence for classical languages — at Tezpur University, Visva-Bharati, Deccan College Pune, Central University of Odisha and Central University of Gujarat — for research and digitisation of linguistic heritage.

The centres will pursue research, digitisation and dissemination of India's classical linguistic heritage, spanning institutions from Assam to Gujarat.

The same week, the Supreme Court directed the CBSE to extend to Class 6 — from April 2027 — the exemption from the three-language formula already given to Classes 7–9, with the Solicitor General telling the court about 99% of board schools had adopted the policy.

And the Indian Institute of Science was ranked joint 254th in the Times Higher Education world rankings released Sept 30 — the highest Indian placing.
