Cyclone Arnab crosses the Andhra coast near Yanam with winds gusting to 150 kmph, after thousands were moved to shelters and transport services were suspended.

Severe Cyclone Arnab began making landfall on Andhra Pradesh's coast in the early hours of Wednesday, bringing high-speed winds and heavy rain that uprooted trees and disrupted power supply in coastal districts.

The India Meteorological Department forecast winds of 125-135 kmph, gusting to 150 kmph, over the landfall area, with a storm surge of 1.5 to 2.5 metres likely to inundate low-lying areas of Andhra Pradesh over the following six hours.

Thousands of people had been evacuated along India's eastern coast ahead of the storm, and train and flight services were cancelled; no loss of life had been reported so far, according to the Andhra Pradesh chief minister's office.
