Booms shake Hyderabad homes; NGRI says no earthquake

Loud booms and brief tremors panic south-west Hyderabad, but NGRI scientists say it was hydro seismicity, not an earthquake, and no damage was reported.
Residents across south-west Hyderabad rushed outdoors on Tuesday morning after loud, explosion-like sounds and brief ground vibrations shook several colonies, including Rajendranagar, Attapur, Uppal and Langar Houz.
The shaking lasted roughly five to ten seconds, rattling windows and shifting household items, but no casualties or significant structural damage were reported, and police began checking possible causes including quarry blasting.
Scientists at the National Geophysical Research Institute said the event was localised hydro seismicity — rainwater seeping into granite bedrock building pressure and releasing energy — rather than a tectonic earthquake, and urged the public to stay calm.
