IIT Kharagpur plans India's first physical AI school, a ₹35 crore bet on robots and autonomous systems that act in the real world.

IIT Kharagpur is set to build India's first school for physical AI — artificial intelligence that senses and acts in the real world, through robots and autonomous systems, rather than only processing data.

The planned ₹35 crore school will focus on courses and curriculum for physical AI, a field where machines must perceive, decide and move in the physical world, with applications from manufacturing to mobility.

The move places Kharagpur at the front of India's push into embodied AI, as labs and companies race to combine AI models with robotics hardware.
