Defence ministry signs Rs 4,100-crore deals for the GSAT-7C communication satellite and Hyderabad-built Varunastra torpedoes.

India's Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth about Rs 4,100 crore ($430 million) for an indigenous communication satellite and heavyweight torpedoes.

The Rs 2,560-crore contract for GSAT-7C, signed with New Space India Limited, Bengaluru, will give the Indian Air Force a dedicated, indigenously built secure communication capability. The Rs 1,540-crore contract for Varunastra anti-submarine torpedoes was signed with Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics.

Varunastra, developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory, is a ship-launched torpedo capable of engaging enemy submarines at long ranges, strengthening the Navy's anti-submarine warfare capability.
