India storm to men's hockey gold with 5-1 rout of Malaysia

India captured the men's hockey gold at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Oct 3, thrashing Malaysia 5-1 in the final — a win that also sealed direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led from the front with two penalty-corner goals, while Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra also scored as India pulled away from Malaysia in Kakamigahara. Shello Silverius netted the lone Malaysian reply.
India had survived a scare in the semifinal, edging arch-rivals Pakistan 4-3 after letting slip a 3-0 lead, with Abhishek scoring a late winner. Malaysia had beaten South Korea 2-1 in their semifinal.
The unbeaten tournament run underlined India's consistency, and with the women's team having ended a 44-year wait for gold a day earlier, India completed a first-ever double hockey gold at the Asian Games.
