India rejects UN rights office concern over Delhi detentions

India on Saturday night dismissed the UN Human Rights Office's concerns over mass detentions during the Delhi protests as “misplaced,” accusing it of interfering in the country's internal affairs.
India's Permanent Mission in Geneva said peaceful assembly is constitutionally guaranteed subject to reasonable restrictions, and urged the OHCHR to attend to large protests elsewhere with equal attention.
The UN office had voiced concern over mass detentions amid demonstrations demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls.
