India votes at the UN for ending the US embargo on Cuba, rejecting laws that affect the sovereignty of other states.

India has voted at the United Nations General Assembly for a resolution demanding an end to the longstanding United States embargo against Cuba, reiterating its rejection of laws that affect other nations' sovereignty.

Addressing the Assembly, counsellor Soumya Nair said New Delhi endorsed the call for all states to refrain from applying laws with extraterritorial effects, in line with the UN Charter and international law.

The resolution passed with 130 votes in favour, 17 against and 25 abstentions, after a tense session in which the United States later expelled a Cuban diplomat over an altercation on the Assembly floor.
