Netanyahu's bloc leads Israel's election count but falls short of a majority, with official results due by November 4.

Counting in Israel's general election has put Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc ahead of the opposition but still short of a parliamentary majority, leaving the country facing another round of coalition bargaining.

Turnout hit 77.7 percent, the highest since 1999, with updated exit polls projecting 54 seats for Netanyahu's allies, 47 for the opposition bloc and 19 for Arab parties outside either camp.

Official results are expected by November 4, and with neither side holding a clear majority, smaller parties and Arab factions could again hold the balance of power.
