OpenAI unveils 'Dots', an always-on agent, as tech CEOs race to mass-market AI agents

OpenAI used its DevDay on Tuesday to unveil Dots, a new always-on agent system that doesn't just answer questions but makes decisions on its own — crawling the web and handling tasks without waiting for step-by-step instructions.
CEO Sam Altman told 2,500 developers packed into the venue that autonomous agents are about to change how people use computers, aiming the assistant at billions of everyday people rather than power users.
The launch puts OpenAI in direct competition with Meta, which has spent September pushing its own agent, Muse, as both companies race to build the AI that sits inside your phone, learns your habits and acts on your behalf.
