Indian benchmarks ended lower on Thursday for the fourth straight session, with the Sensex shedding 0.79% to 71,909.70 and the Nifty falling 0.88% to 22,421.95. Heavy foreign selling, crude above $100 a barrel and weak global cues weighed on sentiment. Markets are closed on Oct 2 for Gandhi Jayanti.

Indian equity benchmarks extended their losing run on Thursday, sliding for a fourth consecutive session as foreign investors kept selling and crude prices stayed above $100 a barrel.

The Sensex closed 570.59 points, or 0.79%, lower at 71,909.70, while the Nifty fell 198.50 points, or 0.88%, to 22,421.95. It marked the eighth straight losing week for the benchmarks amid sustained FPI outflows.

Sectorally, Nifty Auto dropped 3.46% and Nifty IT was the lone gainer, up 2.17%. The rupee weakened 0.5% to 96.315 against the dollar, its weakest in two months. Markets are shut on Oct 2 for Gandhi Jayanti.
