Sensex crashes 1,045 points, Nifty sinks to 18-month low in worst session in three months

The BSE Sensex plunged 1,045.46 points to close at 71,593.24 on Thursday and the Nifty 50 shed 371.25 points to 22,231.80 — its lowest close since April 2025 — as Brent crude jumped past $104 a barrel, US bond yields rose and foreign investors kept selling.
Only 3 of the 30 Sensex stocks ended in the green as selling swept across sectors. Adani Enterprises was the top loser, and investors lost roughly ₹11.56 lakh crore in a single session — the worst one-day rout in three months.
The selloff was driven by Brent crude spiking above $104 on fears of renewed US strikes on Iran and attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, rising US bond yields, continued FPI selling, and the overhang of the RBI's rate hike to 5.50% earlier in the week.
The Nifty hit a fresh 52-week low intraday at 22,179.90, and the India VIX jumped more than 10% above 15 — a sign traders expect more turbulence ahead.
