Tom Cruise's ‘Digger’, the R-rated dark comedy from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, opened on Oct 2 to one of the worst weekends of his career — tracking for about $8 million in the US against a reported budget above $125 million.

The film earned just $3.4 million on Friday from 3,321 US theatres — Cruise's lowest opening since 2007's ‘Lions for Lambs’ — and opened below Warner Bros' already-modest $12–15 million projections, with a weak C+ CinemaScore.

In India it managed only ₹62 lakh net on day one from 579 shows at 15.6% occupancy. Audiences who did see it were surprisingly kind, praising its daring plot twists on Rotten Tomatoes, though critics stayed divided.

Against the reported $125-million-plus budget, analysts expect the film could lose well over $100 million. Cruise has stood by the film, posting on Instagram about how “proud” he is of it.
