TRAI releases draft guidelines on responsible AI use in telecom networks

The norms propose board-level control, risk classification and operator accountability; comments open till 27 November.
The Ministry of Communications said the framework rests on seven guiding principles — trust as the foundation, people first, innovation over restraint, fairness and equity, accountability, understandable-by-design, and safety, resilience and sustainability.
AI is already used across telecom for network optimisation, customer support, fraud detection, cybersecurity and traffic management, which the regulator wants brought under a formal governance system.
The move is part of a busy week for India's AI policy: C-DAC also opened technical bids for a 10,000-GPU tender under the IndiaAI Mission to expand subsidised compute for startups and researchers, and NICSI shortlisted 18 firms to lead an AI modernisation of government digital systems.
