The Swedish Academy awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday to Canadian writer Anne Carson, 76, citing her ‘bold and inventive oeuvre’ that has created new forms for contemporary literature.

The prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million); Carson learned the news while at her home in Iceland and was reportedly taken by surprise.

Known for genre-blending works like 'Autobiography of Red' and 'The Beauty of the Husband', as well as her translations of classical Greek literature, she is the second Canadian to win the prize, after Alice Munro in 2013.

The award continues a strong Nobel season for the humanities, with the literature prize traditionally the most publicly watched of the Academy's announcements.
