A packed boat carrying young festivalgoers overturned in the Ganga in Vaishali district on Tuesday evening; all of the confirmed victims were under 15.

The boat, believed to be carrying up to 20 people, took on water and overturned on Tuesday. A survivor said a hole in the boat caused it to fill with water rapidly, forcing passengers to jump into the river.

Rescue crews have pulled seven people from the water and rushed them to hospital; the search for survivors continues, and the total number on board remains unclear.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the loss of lives deeply painful, and Union Minister Chirag Paswan said the images of the young victims were heartbreaking.
