Voting is taking place in by-elections across constituencies in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Assam, even as the national spotlight stays fixed on the voter-roll revision row.

The contests are being watched as the first electoral test since the SIR controversy sharpened, with all sides reading the results as a signal ahead of bigger battles.

In a separate political development, actor Koel Mallick joined the BJP a day after her Rajya Sabha nomination, calling herself 'blessed and delighted'.

Results from the four states will also be read against the backdrop of the opposition's escalating confrontation with the Election Commission in Delhi.
