The five-year term of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation council has ended, and the Telangana government will appoint a secretary-rank special officer to run the civic body until fresh elections. Municipal polls must be held within six months; the last were in 2020. A proposed split into three corporations is still under review.

The five-year term of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation council has come to an end, and the Telangana government will appoint a secretary-rank special officer to run the civic body until fresh elections are held.

Municipal elections must be conducted within six months of the term's expiry; the last GHMC polls were held in 2020. The corporation now has 300 wards after the merger of 27 urban local bodies.

A proposal to split the GHMC into three corporations — Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri — remains under review and will shape the electoral battle ahead.
