Category 4 Hurricane Simon bears down on Mexico's Pacific coast

President Claudia Sheinbaum urged coastal residents of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Michoacan to stay indoors as Hurricane Simon — a Category 4 storm packing 145 mph winds — neared Mexico's west-central coast on Sunday.
Puerto Vallarta's international airport temporarily closed, and 28 municipalities were placed under the highest cyclone alert as forecasters warned of destructive winds, storm surge and flooding, with uncertainty over whether the eye would cross inland.
Emergency crews were on standby across the region as the storm threatened beach resorts and fishing towns along one of Mexico's busiest tourist corridors.
