Hyderabad water board saves 18 MGD during pipeline shutdown

The Hyderabad water board has reported savings of 18 million gallons a day during a planned pipeline shutdown, crediting tighter monitoring and quick-turn repairs.

The board scheduled the shutdown to carry out maintenance on a key trunk line, and used the window to plug leakages and recalibrate supply zones across the network.

Saving 18 MGD — nearly a fifth of what some of the city's reservoirs yield daily — shows how much water quietly escapes ageing infrastructure between source and tap.

Officials say the lessons from the shutdown will feed into a longer programme to cut non-revenue water across the board's jurisdiction.
