India finish fourth at Asian Games 2026 with 85 medals, second-best haul ever

India closed its Aichi-Nagoya 2026 campaign on Oct 3 with 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze — finishing fourth behind China, Japan and South Korea in the country's second-highest Asian Games haul.
Cricket and hockey delivered the late gold rush: both men's and women's cricket teams defended their titles, both kabaddi teams won gold, and the women's hockey team ended a 44-year wait for an Asian Games crown.
Archery was India's richest gold source with five, including a historic first women's individual recurve gold for 17-year-old Kumkum Mohod, who also qualified for LA 2028. Golfer Pranavi Urs became the first Indian woman to win an individual Asian Games golf medal.
The roughly 500-strong contingent fell short of Hangzhou 2023's record 106 medals but matched the fourth-place finish. China topped the table with 341 medals, ahead of hosts Japan and South Korea.
