A US intelligence memo dated October 23 warns that Iranian plots to attack American citizens abroad have substantially increased and reached advanced stages in the Middle East and some other countries.

The unclassified memo to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, written by Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton and obtained by Axios, says the threat level against Americans in the region is at its highest since the Iran war began.

The warning is informing staffing decisions at US embassies in the region, with nonessential personnel and families ordered to leave Saudi Arabia amid attacks by Iran-backed Houthis, officials said.

The State Department said it constantly evaluates the security environment at its posts, while reports say the US has moved to relocate diplomats and personnel from certain Middle East posts.
