A tsunami warning has been cancelled after a powerful earthquake struck off Vanuatu on Saturday, the US Geological Survey revising the magnitude down to 6.9 after initially recording 7.2.

The epicentre was around 200 kilometres north-west of Port Olry, and a second quake of magnitude 6.3 was reported nearby. No immediate reports of major damage had emerged when the warning was lifted.

Earthquakes are common in Vanuatu, a low-lying archipelago straddling the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of seismic activity stretching through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

The tremor came in a week of seismic activity across the region, with a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Tibet's Nagqu city also reported in recent days.
