AI heads to the Moon: first LLMs to run on the lunar surface

Later this year, large language models are set to run on the Moon for the first time aboard Astrolab's FLIP rover — a NASA-contracted Artemis precursor slated to fly on the Griffin-1 mission as early as November.
Its payload includes HPE's Spaceborne-4 edge computer, capable of running LLMs in parallel, and the mission will test whether AI can operate reliably in the lunar environment, including retrieval-augmented generation from onboard manuals.
The goal: give future explorers autonomy without real-time Earth control. (Note: the mission timing is reported by a regional outlet; treat as provisional.)
