Legendary Hindi and Marathi actor Nana Patekar died on Thursday morning at his residence in Dona Paula, Goa, after suffering a cardiac arrest; doctors performed CPR for about 45 minutes before pronouncing him dead at 5:20 am.

Patekar, 75, was rushed to Manipal Hospital after the cardiac arrest; a medico-legal case was registered and a post-mortem required. Tributes poured in from Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Ram Gopal Varma, who called him ‘the god of acting’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the funeral would be held with full state honours.

Across a career spanning five decades, Patekar became one of Indian cinema's most intense and respected performers, equally at home in searing dramas and beloved comedies.
