Opposition parties staged a third consecutive day of demonstrations on Thursday demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation over the controversial revision of voter lists, which they allege the BJP is rigging in its favour.

Mamata Banerjee arrived in Delhi to join the INDIA bloc, with a big protest expected at Jantar Mantar on Friday. Delhi's liquor shops will stay closed on October 9–10 as authorities brace for the gathering.

The EC and the BJP have denied the allegations, calling them baseless — even as the row over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls grows into the country's loudest political theme.

The confrontation follows detentions of opposition leaders earlier in the week and shows no sign of cooling, with the opposition linking street politics to legal battles in the Supreme Court.
