US sanctions Rwanda defence ministry over Congo conflict

The US sanctions Rwanda's defence ministry in fresh Congo-related measures as fighting continues despite American-led mediation.
The United States has imposed sanctions on Rwanda's ministry of defence in fresh Congo-related measures, according to the Treasury Department.
The move follows the advance of AFC/M23 rebels, who control large parts of North and South Kivu after capturing eastern Congo's two largest cities in early 2025, with the UN and Western governments saying the group is backed by Rwanda, which Kigali denies.
Fighting continues despite mediation efforts led by the United States, which have so far brought little change on the ground, and neither government immediately responded to the sanctions.
