Serbia's leader concedes defeat to the student-backed party after record turnout, as crowds celebrate across the country.

Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic has conceded defeat to the student-backed Student List party after a record-turnout election, with crowds pouring into the streets of Belgrade and towns across Serbia in celebration.

Radomir Saicic, a chemistry professor at the University of Belgrade who stood as a candidate for the Student List, called it a victory of courage over fear and urged supporters to celebrate peacefully and with dignity.

The Student List coalesced after the collapse of a railway station canopy at Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people and prompted outrage at alleged shoddy construction linked to corrupt contracting.
